DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN

These designations were created within the European Union to protect certain food and agricultural products of typical of a specific region.

• Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is applied to products whose production, processing, and preparation all occur in a specific geographic area known for its expertise and its specialties.
  

• Protected Geographical Status (PGS) follows the same logic, but it only necessary that either the production, the processing, or the preparation occur in the area.
  

In the European Union, around 80% of the products protected by these categories come from Mediterranean countries. However, some non-European countries in the Mediterranean are starting to incorporate these designations.
