Atlantis IX Youth Camp "Saving water.Saving lives"

For the third time, the Regional Activity Centre for Cleaner Production (CP/RAC) took part in the Atlantis Youth Camp organized by de Cooperation Center in the Mediterranean (CCM) of Red Cross and Red Crescent. The 9th edition was held in Jahorina (Bosnia and Herzegovina) from the 30th June to the 7th July and was attended by 60 youths, aged between 18 and 28 years, volunteers of Red Cross and Red Crescent in the Mediterranean.

This year’s event, held within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation, was focused on the role of youth in advocating in favour of the promotion of environmental sustainability, focusing on the access to safe drinking and sanitation water as a recognized human right, and tackling the assets of youth participation in a timely green growth process.

CP/RAC participated by organizing the Workshop on education for sustainable consumption and production and gender, through which the 22 participants were introduced to concepts such as life cycle, consumption patterns, sustainable lifestyles, and so on. The workshop was structured with practical activities regarding major environmental challenges, impacts created by the current lifestyles, complexity of the links between production and consumptions, education and governance as well as environmental induced by the products throughout their life cycles.

Thus, participants carried out activities such as design the life cycle of a water bottle, think about the social and environmental impacts in the production of textiles and seek solutions to reduce the effects from the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) among other activities. At the end of the workshop, youth prepared an “art show” about the impacts connected with the manufacture of textiles. In addition, and after viewing the video “The Story of Change”, each of them promised to do some action when they returned to their countries.

The most part of youth that took part in the workshop evaluated it between good and excellent. CP/RAC will stay in touch with them to monitor and support them for future activities.
