The Project holds its annual meeting to discuss progress in the search of the effects caused by marine litter, specifically of plastics, on marine organisms, and on the social and economic conditions in Europe which act as generator of these wastes. The aim of the project is to improve the knowledge of the composition of marine litter, distribution and impacts, to identify the strategies and the right combination of measures to minimize this problem.
The Catalan Waste Agency, which currently holds the presidency of ACR+ (the European network of local and regional agents for the integrated management of resources and waste) will present best practice models as the pilot project “Deposit, Refund & Restoration System (DRRS)” and “The Plastic Bag Agreement”. Also, Enrique de Villamore, Director of the Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC), will present the Regional Plan on Marine Litter Management in the Mediterranean which has been recently approved in the 18th Conference of Parties of the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols.
The CleanSea Project responds to the interest of the European Union to address the problem of marine litter to have a healthy state of the marine environment. In this sense, the CleanSea Project does not work only on possible corrective and cleaning measures but, as well, on production, consumption and behaviour measures.
