Institutional framework

The Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) is a centre operating, since 1996, under the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) for the protection and development of the Mediterranean basin. The Plan was adopted in 1975 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the aim of protecting and improving the environment and developing the region’s resources, based on the principles of sustainability.

Since 2009, the SCP/RAC is also a regional centre for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from chemicals that remain intact in the environment for long periods.

Organically, the Centre is attached to the Waste Agency of Catalonia of the Catalan Government and to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment  (MAGRAMA).
