New green business opportunities on alternatives to hazardous chemicals in the Mediterranean

On the 18th and 19th of November Alger hosed a seminar titled "Green chemistry and eco-entrepreneurship" aiming at supporting Green Entrepreneurs for a POPs Free Mediterranean. More than 40 participants were trained during two productive days, in which international experts presented green alternatives to hazardous chemicals (in particular Persistent Organic Pollutants, POPs) and shared key tools for the creation of a competitive eco-business.

Sara Perez from ISTAS (Instituto  Sindical de Trabajo Ambiente y Salud) highlighted methodologies and good practices based on the SubsPort project, which is a is a free-of-charge, multilingual platform for information exchange on alternative substances and technologies, as well as tools and guidance for substance evaluation and substitution management. Amit Paul, founder of Paxymer, explained how to commit stakeholders and create a sound business model without using any toxic chemicals.

"The participants, a great mix of sectors and background, showed an outstanding level of commitment and expertise on the training-related topic, in particular in the field of environment, entrepreneurship and human health" explained Jeremie Fosse, SCP/RAC expert on sustainability.

This training was organized by the Regional Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) with the support of the Stockholm Convention and the Algerian Ministry of Environment.
