Preventing pollution from harmful chemicals in Lebanon: SCP/RAC is looking for a national expert/consultant with strong knowledge of chemical management

The Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) is seeking a national expert/consultancy based in Lebanon with knowledge of chemicals management to provide technical assistance on the implementation of prevention approaches for 3 new POPs (PFAs, HBCD, SCCP).
The objective of the expert’s mission will be to provide technical assistance to achieve the practical replacement of these 3 new POPs, listed in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention, through the adoption of environmentally sound alternatives in Lebanon.
The selected expert will support SCP/RAC in the implementation process of the inventorying, sampling and substitution of these chemicals with safe alternatives. The expert will also be involved in specific activities, led by SCP/RAC and aiming at providing policy support to Lebanon in strengthening regulation regarding toxic chemicals.
This consultancy takes place in the framework of the 'Mediterranean Sea Program' (MedProgramme) funded by the GEF, in which SCP/RAC is mainly involved in the implementation of component 1 - Reduction of Land Based Pollution in Priority Coastal Hotspots and Measuring Progress to Impacts.
The duration of this first consultancy is estimated until the end of January 2022.

More about the MedProgramme:
- In June 2020, The Mediterranean Action Plan of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP) announced the “Mediterranean Sea Programme (MedProgramme): Enhancing Environmental Security” (2019-2024), a 43 million USD endeavour funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with the aim of reducing major environmental stresses, strengthening climate resilience and water security, and improving the health and livelihoods of coastal populations in the Mediterranean region.
- The MedProgramme represents the first GEF programmatic multi-focal area initiative in the Mediterranean Sea.
- SCP/RAC as centre operating in support of two international treaties: the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterraneanand the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, is playing a key role in the implementation of the MedProgramme, and is mainly involved in the implementation of component 1 - Reduction of Land Based Pollution in Priority Coastal Hotspots and Measuring Progress to Impacts.
- In the framework of the MedProgramme, SCP/RAC has proposed an innovative approach to tackle the issue of toxic chemicals based on preventing the use of toxic substances identified as country priorities in order to avoid the generation of hazardous waste whose end-of-life management is very costly.
