Workshop on the Environmentally Sound Management of Plastic Wastes for the prevention of marine litter and plastic pollution

2 avril 2019

SCP/RAC (Spain Stockholm Convention Regional Centre) will host the first workshop of a series organized by the BRS Secretariat to raise awareness of marine litter pollution caused by plastics. The workshop, organized in the framework of the agreement signed between Sweden and the BRS Secretariat, will take place in Barcelona (3rd-5th of April).

The workshop participants will share knowledge and tools available for the Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of plastic wastes. Moreover, the invited participants will receive training on the effects of plastic waste pollution in the sea and the effects caused by micro and nano plastics accumulation in the marine trophic chain. Experts and countries will share solutions at hands from replacement options to other prevention strategies. The workshop will provide opportunities to share experiences on alternative solutions to single-use plastics, learning from countries which have already put in place a ban on single-use plastic. The participating Basel and Stockholm regional centres will share their current efforts towards reducing plastic pollution, marine litter plastic and microplastics through policy solutions, awareness-raising campaigns and marine environment monitoring programmes.

The workshop participants will include academic institutions, private actors playing a role in marine litter and microplastic prevention and the UN Environment Regional sub programme coordinators for hazardous chemicals and wastes as well as the Special Programme Secretariat and the SAICM Secretariat, hosted by the UN Environment Chemicals and Health Branch.

The main objectives of the workshop are:

 - To inform the participants on the recent developments relating to the different aspects of ESM of plastic waste (inventory, recycling, prevention strategies, policy instruments…)
- Identify country needs and challenges related to the ESM of plastic waste
- Identify project opportunities, on ESM of plastic waste, relevant for the UN Environment special Programme.

The second workshop is planned to be organized in Indonesia by the BCRC in June.
