Meeting for the review of the Industrial Chemicals Management Toolkit

On December 2014, the SCP/RAC signed an agreement with the Secretariat of the BRS Conventions in order to carry on a review of the industrial chemicals management Toolkit under the Rotterdam Convention.

With this objective, SCP/RAC convened a Meeting for the peer review of the Toolkit the past 25th and 26th of February 2015 in Barcelona. There were experts on chemical management from Sri Lanka, Viet Nam, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, Moldova, France, Germany and Spain.

The review of the Toolkit is being implemented under the supervision of SCP/RAC, with the technical support of the non for profit Organization ISTAS (Union Institute for Work, Health and Environment), which is one of the partners of the project on toxic chemicals substitution SUBSPORT (www.subsport.eu), and has participated also on different capacity building activities of SCP/RAC.

The Toolkit is intended to facilitate the effective implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions for countries with low and medium resources. One of the specific mandates of the Rotterdam Convention is to support the development of industrial chemicals management in developing countries.

The Toolkit will provide the following information about the industrial chemicals:

1. Accurate and consolidate information so as to assist developing countries in responding to their related obligations under the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions

2. Step-by-step, tailored and modular approach for the management of industrial chemicals

3. Tools for the identification of best practices to implement a system for the management of industrial chemicals

4. Tools and procedures to support the substitution of dangerous substances

The new Toolkit will include the suggestions and comments received during the Meeting and will be published on the website of the Rotterdam Convention.
