WES national activity in Morocco: "Joint initiative for the establishment of the management chain for PET bottle packaging within the framework of EPR in Morocco"

Morocco's National Sustainable Development Strategy (SNDD) identifies the circular economy as a key project for sustainable waste management and has been a reference for the launch of the National Waste Recovery Program (PNVD), the main objective of which is the development of waste recovery channels.

It is in this context that the Department of the Environment at the Ministry of Energy, Mines and the Environment in Morocco requested support within the framework of the WES project for the implementation of an action that consolidates the basis of a future management channel for used PET bottles in Morocco, which is based on the principle of Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR).

This circular economy activity aims to improve the sorting, collection and recovery system for PET beverage packaging waste in Morocco through support for the establishment of the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR). PET line. To do this, several tasks are envisaged:

• Constitution of a steering committee which will validate the subsequent stages of the action.

• Diagnosis of the state of play and evaluation of previous initiatives to identify opportunities and methods of implementing EPR. This includes interviews with stakeholders to determine their vision and proposals.

• Facilitation of a dialogue between all the stakeholders involved in the sector, in particular through a workshop. During this workshop, a specific subject for the implementation of EPR for the PET bottles sector will be approached and discussed.

• Preparation of a framework agreement and roadmap for the operationalization of EPR for the PET bottles industry.

The kick-off meeting, held online on April 28, 2021, saw the participation of officials from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Environment, the EU Delegation, representatives of the packaging industry, as well as experts from WES.

The duration of the activity is 14 months and it is set up by experts from SCP / RAC and ACR +, members of the WES consortium.
